Discovering the Secrets of Cottage Pond

Exploring the Unique Blue Hole Formed by the Karst Process in North Caicos

Cottage pond formed by a geological process called the Karst process. Sea levels play a significant role in the formation of blue holes. This explains why the Middle Caicos Ocean Hole, likely the widest blue hole in the world, has a similar depth even though it is located 19 miles (31 km) away. Cottage Pond is slightly tidal and connected to the ocean, probably through the porous limestone of the Caicos Islands plateau and tiny fissures. The pond’s surface has about 20 feet (6 m) of relatively fresh water, which reflects the thickness of the freshwater lens in North Caicos. Below this lens is a layer where fresh and salt water mix, and below that, the water is as salty as the ocean. For most visitors, Cottage Pond is just a small scenic pond. However, it is a great place to see a tropical blue hole. Nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers will find it interesting, making it worth a quick visit.

Unveiling the Depths: The 2001 Exploration of Cottage Pond

In the past, the depth and structure of Cottage Pond were unknown. However, in 2001, the Caicos Cave Project cave diving team reached the bottom of Cottage Pond. The team used complex diving techniques and gas mixtures to reach the bottom due to the pond’s depth. During their exploration, they discovered that beyond 140 feet (43 m), Cottage Pond opens into a much larger cave.

During these explorations, it was found that past 140 feet (43 m), Cottage Pond opens into a much larger cave.
