Iguana Island
See the endemic Turks and Caicos Rock Iguanas
Little Water Cay is an island of approximately 116.2 acres, northeast of the Leeward area of Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands. It is a low-lying former island. It is a very important wildlife habitat, particularly for the endangered endemic Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana (Cyclura carinata). Little Water Cay is also known as ‘Iguana island’. It is home to about 3,000 endemic Turks and Caicos Islands Rock Iguana and an excellent eco-tour site for families.
A nature experience
Nature lovers can observe several habitats on the cay, including mangrove and buttonwood communities, hyper-saline and tidal flat areas, coastal coppice, and coastal scrub. In addition to our diverse flora visitors can spot a good range of birds typical of coastal habitats such as Osprey, Brown Pelicans, several species of shorebird and Bananaquits.
Hermit crab are commonly seen after rain. Southern stingrays are commonly seen on the south shore sand flats. Lemon sharks prefer moderately deep tropical waters such as the water surrounding Little Water Cay.
Protected Nature Reserve
Little Water Cay is a Nature Reserve and Protected Area. To protect the endangered iguanas please follow our “Iguana etiquette”. Follow the trails and signs on site. Stay on the boardwalk. No dogs or cats are allowed, and there must be no disturbing or feeding of the iguanas and please keep noise to a minimum. Please reduce the risk of fire by not smoking. Litter attracts rats which destroy iguana eggs so there are no litter facilities on the island – please take your garbage away with you.
